Practical tips

The public feed updates once per day. The tool shows its UTC update time and preserves your chosen currencies when refreshing. A current cached response avoids unnecessary repeat requests. If a refresh fails, a saved response remains explicitly labelled cached; data older than 48 hours carries a freshness notice. With no dated response, the tool waits for a connection rather than using an undated built-in table. Common mistakes

Conversion results are estimates; the mistakes are in how they are used:

• Treating an estimate as your provider’s transaction quote: exchange spreads and fees vary by provider, payment method and transaction.
• Acting on yesterday's rate: rates move daily and sometimes sharply, so re-check anything calculated earlier.
• Entering an unsupported amount format: use the number field’s accepted decimal format and check the displayed amount; blank, negative and non-finite amounts are rejected.
• Rounding inconsistently when splitting a bill — pick one direction and apply it to every payer.
