Rates here are reference rates for estimation — your bank or card adds a spread and fees on top, so treat results as planning numbers, not invoice numbers. Rates change daily; re-check anything you calculated yesterday before acting on it. For expense splitting, round in the payer's favor consistently rather than mixing rounding directions. The tool works offline after first load; rates refresh when you reload. The conversion arithmetic runs in your browser and the amount you type is never sent anywhere. On load the page does request live reference rates from a third-party rate service (open.er-api.com), which sees your IP address the same way any web request does — if that request fails or you are offline, the tool falls back to the built-in rate table and says so. Common mistakes

Conversion results are estimates; the mistakes are in how they are used:

• Treating reference rates as the rate your bank will actually apply — spreads and fees commonly add one to three percent on top.
• Acting on yesterday's rate: rates move daily and sometimes sharply, so re-check anything calculated earlier.
• Entering amounts with the wrong locale convention (1,000.50 versus 1.000,50), which shifts the decimal point silently.
• Rounding inconsistently when splitting a bill — pick one direction and apply it to every payer.
